Customize Your Square Terminal Idle Background Image

Give your Square Terminal a personal touch! Whether you want to showcase your branding or add a little fun flair to your setup, customizing the idle screen on your Square Terminal can help your checkout feel more polished and professional.

A NOTE:

You can only display custom background images when your Square Terminal is paired with a mobile device (like a phone or tablet).

If you’re using the Terminal as a standalone device, the idle screen will show your inventory items instead - which can’t be changed with this method.

This tutorial is for customizing the idle background when the Terminal is paired with a mobile device.

Part 1: Upload Your Images

(Must be Done from a Computer or Mobile Browser)

🚫 This part can’t be done directly from the terminal.

STEP 1: From a browser (on your phone or computer), go to your Square Dashboard.

Navigate to: Account & Settings → Business Information → Locations

STEP 2: Click on the name of your active Location. (If you only have one, that’s the one you want.)

STEP 3: Scroll down to the Branding section. Near the bottom, you’ll see an option for Terminal Background. Upload your images here.

NOTE:
JPG or PNG only.
Maximum of 4 Images.
No animated GIFs - but if you want your screen to "move," you can upload 4 images as animation-style frames to simulate it

STEP 4: Click Save when you're done!

Part 2: Set Up the Terminal

This part is done directly on terminal.

STEP 5: You MUST be signed in using a device code and have the terminal connected to your Square account via a mobile device.

If you are logged in with a username and password, you'll need to log out.

STEP 6: On your Terminal, swipe from the left edge of the screen to open the side menu.
Go to: Settings → Hardware → Display

STEP 7: Adjust Your Display Settings

If you don’t see the image options here, make sure your terminal is up-to-date with any and all updates.

Turn on Show Image, Show Business Name, or both.

  • Show Business name will grey out the background and put your business name in the center of the screen
  • Show Image will display the images you uploaded earlier (and rotate through them if you have multiple)
  • Turning on both will show your image(s), grey it out, and put your business name in the center

Adjust Image Timing and Brightness.

  • Image Timing changes how long each image displays for. The shorter the time, the faster your images will change.
  • A Note on Battery Life: Higher brightness and frequent image changes can reduce battery life!
